Multiple Group-Stakes Winner Raven’s Lady Wins Friday Feature
Raven’s Lady, a two-time group-stakes winner in Europe last year, captured her first victory in the U.S. in Friday’s Race 8 feature at Gulfstream Park.
Owned by D. P. Racing LLC and Medallion Racing, the 5-year-old daughter of Raven’s Pass had been winless in three previous U.S. starts, all graded-stakes, before prevailing by 1 ½ lengths in Friday’s 7 ½-furlong optional claiming allowance for fillies and mares on turf.
Making her first start for trainer Patrick Biancone, Raven’s Lady was crowed and fanned wide heading into the first turn before settling well off the pace set by stablemate Beachwood Ella, who set fractions of 23.40 and 47.64 seconds for the first half mile. Raven’s Lady, the 9-5 favorite ridden by Jairo Rendon, rallied leaving the backstretch before making an impressive four-wide sweep to the lead entering the stretch. The English-bred mare asserted her class and drew away to victory.
“This is a nice filly,” Biancone said. “Next, she will be going to Kentucky Downs for the sprint for fillies and mares [$500,000 Kentucky Downs Ladies Sprint (G3), Sept. 7].
Last year, trainer Marco Botti saddled Raven’s Lady for back-to-back victories in the Summer Stakes (G3) at York and the Boldene Peitsche (G2) at Baden-Baden.
Raven’s Lady ran 7 ½ furlongs in 1:30.47 over a good turf course. Zarina, who captured the Martha Washington Stakes at Gulfstream July, rallied from last while following the lead of Raven’s Lady to finish second under Leonel Reyes. Midnight Soiree finished third under Albin Jimenez, another length back.
